Taylor Street Strike-A Rebranding Story
It was supposed to be a fairly simple logo rework. Nothing huge, necessarily. The past year has been hard and held a lot of transition for me personally, my family and Lion & Anvil (our former brand). Sometimes in the middle of the fires, something changes or becomes solid, but you don't realize it until later. That has been the past year and the logo rework helped clarify what had solidified. I knew something was different and changing the logo seemed like the logical step to showcase that. I wasn't ready for what was really there though. I was sitting with a couple of friends and talking through this re-work...then came the bomb.
"Why didn't you choose something to do with hawks for your brand?".
Before I could answer, an explanation for the question followed. "When I see a hawk, I think of you. Actually, because of you, I look for them now." I was silent. I didn't know. But that seed was planted and there was no going back.
Over the next few days...germination. After talking to the team and hashing it out in my own mind, I knew change was coming. But I was still resistant or hesitant. So I went back to the beginning, where it started for me.
I don't remember the year or the time of year, but it must have been about 16 years ago. I'm not sure where I was going that day, I just remember driving down Taylor Street and then the flash of white and rusty red. And the precision. The sudden death of a field mouse at the end of Taylor Street changed my life.
This wasn't the first time I had seen this hawk, but it was the first (and only) time I had seen it sink its talons into a field mouse from about 12 feet away and then fly off as matter-of-factly as can be. Even though I knew I was alone, I frantically looked around hoping I wasn't the lone witness to this aerial assault. We lived in the country and no one lived at the end of Taylor Street. I obviously knew that, but my mind was racing and I wanted badly to share the experience.
I was not aware of it when I drove off, but I just had an encounter with an animal that would change my life forever.
I had already become casually acquainted with this hawk and its mate as they occupied airspace above my land. I would observe their soaring ballet as I drove the tractor, the brush hog thrashing away behind me. I found I was partial to their red tail feathers.
But everything changed after the Taylor Street strike. When I saw those red tails, the mower stopped, silencing the diesel noise so that I could catch the sound of their shrill cries. I started to study and read about them a little. They no longer just flew higher. No, that's what the old me would think as I kept mowing. No, these two were now 'catching thermals'.
It's not that I'm an expert on Red-tailed Hawks, or raptors in general. But, if you're with me and I spot one, you'll know their effect on me. Put it this way, you could be telling me how your great-grandmama just past away and if I see a hawk fly by I'm pretty much going to enthusiastically interrupt you mid-sentence with something like, 'Dude, check it!'. It's nothing personal, though.
The encounters have been many over the years. And, save for a couple of 'birds of prey' demonstrations, they are always unplanned. And they're always appreciated. Actually, appreciated is a cheap way to describe them. Whether it's the serenity of a perched 'watcher' waiting for one false move, the sunlight shining through horizontal tail feathers in flight, or the outstretched talons prior to impact, all hawk sightings mean something to me. It's difficult to explain, but times where I had almost given up, in those moments where hope is just out of grasp, a red-tail would enter my line of sight. Seeing that bird would bring the grit I needed to keeping going.
Along the way many friends and family have joined me in this journey. I didn't realize it until that question was dropped on me a few months ago. These birds have impacted me, and my wonder and awe were contagious. And now it's our journey. A commonality among us. Sometimes I get fuzzy, hastily taken pictures. Sometimes a shaky video. Sometimes a story. I treasure every single one they send me.
That's our desire here at REDTAIL Hardgoods...to establish common ground. We're forged with grit and we need each other to bring out our stories, showcasing who we really are.
KEITH DUGGER (FOUNDER & CEO)
Having resided in Texas my whole life, I cherish being a son of The Republic. Back when I was growing up in Conroe it was a place you’d probably look past at first glance, but man are there stories. I met people that pulled me up, pushed me beyond comfort, challenged me, and loved on me. But it wasn't until long after my youth that I began to step into my potential and really live out my passion.
I had been collecting old items for years without really knowing why, until a mentor challenged me to figure out the motivation behind it. What I discovered was an intrigue with legacy pieces. Things that had stood the test of time. Without knowing their history, these items were still telling a story with their patina, nicks, and dents. I decided that I wanted to create the same type of durable, timeless goods.
I’m a family man through and through. My bride of nearly 20 years, Juliette, is my number one fan and supporter. She is also our chief networker and problem solver. Don't let her good looks fool you though, she's a tough negotiator. Okay, so she basically runs the company...and I'm just a pretend front man. Happy now?!
My sons, Kole and Kamden, are my co-founders and partners in crime. They remind me how important imagination, creativity, trust and having fun are in this life. I have two daughters, Chloe and Kinnley, who are the resident shop-fairies and queens-in-training. I take delight in them and look for every opportunity to spoil them.
I like candlelit dinners, chocolate, and long walks on the beach. Okay, so none of that is true. Except chocolate...I do like me some chocolate.
This, for me, is what it all comes down to: I am a potential extractor. I believe there is more to your neighbor than meets the eye. Sometimes others need help to believe that...that's what I'm here for. And that’s what we strive to do with our products. They tell, carry and collect stories, though you may miss it at first glance.
JULIETTE DUGGER, co-founder & Chief negotiating officer
My roots run deep in my beloved state of Texas...so deep, that I’ve never lived anywhere else! The desire to relocate from my hometown of Conroe, didn’t even arise until years later. What was my change of heart? Just go google “Texas Hill Country” and that question will answer itself!
Beyond being honored to be the one and only wife of nearly twenty years to “the maker” and mama to four of the coolest little critters on the planet a.k.a. my children (that’s what we call ‘em in Texas), here’s a bit about my background...
I resigned from Corporate America in 2002 and became a crazy entrepreneur by starting my own business with a little one in tow and another bun cookin’ in the oven! My mission since day one hasn’t changed...I get a kick out of empowering female entrepreneurs to find their grit, just like I did, so they too can create a life of providence, freedom and joy! Time and time again potential is tapped through personal mentoring and professional coaching with our clients. We get to watch this be unleashed in each lioness who embody irreplaceable seeds of greatness! So, that’s what “I DO”, but how does REDTAIL Hard Goods fit into my story...well, I’m married to the founder! Seriously...when Keith invited me into his world of goods, the timing was impeccable and I said, YES! The day I knew I had made the right decision to step in and partner with Keith to move REDTAIL forward, was on a Sunday, a week from Father’s Day 2015. We were invited by some dear friends to do a product collaboration with them for a giveaway and we received a great response through social media. This influx required more help in the workshop to make sure fathers everywhere would get their goods on time! My mom had come up for a quick visit this same weekend and was available to entertain our youngest, who’s five. So, while they were busy having a tea party, our three older children all rose to the occasion and jumped in to have our own party...a packing and shipping party! From folding boxes, to checking shipping information and everything in between, these kids asked one question, “What do we need to do, dad and mom?”. Looking around me, tears began to roll down my face, as I watched our family pull together because of the greatest gift of all...love of family.
We’ve learned how to create the work we love around what we love most...our faith, our family and our tightly-woven community of friends. These aren’t just goods we are sending out each week, it’s love and commitment to give you a little piece of what we hold so dear...our legacy. I believe our greatest level of influence is not measured just by being a fabulous business owner, but by the most valuable relationships in our lives. Thanks for listening!
Juliette is a wife, home-school mama, mentor, speaker, author, friend to many and hummus snob! From female business executives to the stay-at-home mom, her story of renewal and restoration impacts lives of women everywhere. Her riveting story of childhood tragedy turned triumphant, encourages a life of transformation in others. She is founder and CEO of Barefoot Millionaires,LLC and Raw Outlaw.
WILLIAM CURRIe, chief operating officer
I was introduced to this life on the move in a 1984 Buick, and things haven't slowed down for me since. Raised in the heart of Dixie, my roots stretch from Tennessee to California, from Canada to far across the pond. I moved to Texas for love (I found it) and opportunity (there's plenty of it). My wife, Maria, is from deep in the heart of Mexico and beautifies anything she touches. We have three kids so far...and we’re counting.
In the midst of constant commotion, a deep undercurrent has surged. I say it began when I was four years old, though it was probably long before that. It's the practice of hearing your calling and wholeheartedly working that out. It's a life-long thing and the more people you have on the journey, working out what's hidden in the depths of their souls, the more courage you have to risk in your own adventure.
Keith met me early on in my Texas days. Our families have grown closer over the years and we found ourselves working together the more REDTAIL materialized. Having vision and team have never been more important than the days we’re living now. I love talking bravery around a plateful of biscuits.
